We have had a wonderful Christmas, sharing the lodge with Polish, Canadian and Australian guests who were so good. New Year has come and gone and we are now into 2012. Whow
We now have the beginnings of our cycle way in Waihi open and being enjoyed. We have guests hire bikes, which they collect at the Waihi railway station. Take the train ride into the Karangahake Gorge to the Waikino station from where they can do different trails and then catch the train back to Waihi A fabulous day, stopping at either the Talisman cafe, Ohinemuri Winery, Waikino Cafe or the Bistro for lunch on the way. A great way to experience some of Waihi’s mining history. There are also various trails in Waihi to ride, so plenty of choices when looking for some cycling exercise.
We are pleased to report the Rena, the ship that ran aground off our coast is slowly but surely being cleared of cargo. They got all the oil off and now working to get all the containers removed. The oil that came ashore earlier was, fortunately for us, away south of here and the containers are being taken off daily so our fabulous Waihi Beach and the beaches north have not been effected. We can see the ship, through binoculars, form here so watching progress with interest.
We are feeling very concerned for our friends in Christchurch which is still being shaken with aftershocks every now and then. It must be so unsettling We fortunately, have never had an earthquake, that we could feel here. We are not on any fault line in this area.
Wanting to learn more about our Maori history? We now have 4 different options for guided tours in this area. These are 2-3 hour experiences with a local guide, telling the stories from the past and a visit to the local Pa. Learn about battles fought, sacred sites, and traditional medicines used. We have so much interesting history right here.
We look forward to meeting lots more guests from around the world, this season Please come and share our special place with us
Best Wishes
Marg
